FAQ – What is a PVD Finish?

What does PVD stand for?

PVD stands for Physical Vapour Deposition. It’s an advanced coating process that creates a finish much stronger than standard chrome plating, while still delivering a beautiful shine.

How does the PVD coating process work?

•
A metal is turned into vapour in a vacuum environment.

•
The vapour is applied to the tap in one or more ultra-thin layers.

•
These layers are wafer-thin, so they don’t affect the design or detail of the tap.

Because the process happens in a controlled vacuum and uses lower temperatures, it’s also considered more environmentally friendly than many traditional plating methods.

Why is PVD better than standard chrome?

PVD is:

•
  Stronger and more durable

•
  More resistant to scratches

•
Less likely to oxidise or tarnish

•
Resistant to most household cleaning products

•
  Long-lasting with a high-quality shine

Is PVD environmentally friendly?

Yes. The vacuum-based process requires lower temperatures and produces fewer harmful by-products compared to traditional plating methods.

Where else is PVD used?

PVD isn’t just used on taps. It’s also commonly applied to:

•
  Cutlery

•
  Door handles and fittings

•
  Watches

•
Other high-use metal products that need to stay looking good

Are there any downsides to PVD?

•
Slightly higher cost compared to standard finishes.

•
More limited colour options (although this is improving over time).
