Which Zip HydroTap Filter Kit Do I Need?

If you own a Zip HydroTap, and your location is in a hard water area, choosing the correct filter kit (and periodically replacing its cartridge) is essential for maintaining water quality, protecting your system from limescale and ensuring optimum performance.

The good news is it's simple – your HydroTap will usually require one of just three filter kits

Why Replace Your HydroTap Filter?

Replacing your HydroTap filter regularly helps to:

  • Improve the taste and quality of drinking water

  • Reduce limescale build-up

  • Protect your HydroTap command centre

  • Maintain optimum boiling, chilled and sparkling water performance

  • Extend the lifespan of your system

How Often Should I Replace My HydroTap Filter Kit filter Cartridge?

For Zip HydroTap external limescale filter kits (95591, 95592 and 95593), the replacement interval depends on both time and water usage.

General recommendation

  • Domestic (95591): Replace the external cartridge (95601) every 12 months, or sooner if the filter reaches its rated capacity.
  • Commercial (95592 & 95593): Replace the external cartridge (95602 or 95603) every 6 months as part of a planned maintenance schedule, or sooner if the water usage exceeds the filter's capacity.

By filter kit

Filter Kit Replacement Cartridge Typical Change Interval
95591 (Home) 95601 Every 12 months
95592 (100/75 & 140/75) 95602 Every 6 months
95593 (160/175 & 240) 95603 Every 6 months

Why commercial filters are changed more often

Commercial HydroTaps typically serve far more people, so although the limescale filters are larger, they are designed around higher throughput. Zip's commercial guidance bases the filter sizing on expected daily litres and user numbers and recommends six-monthly replacement as part of HydroCare Plus to maintain limescale protection.

  • HydroTap for Home: Replace the external limescale cartridge every year.
  • HydroTap for Work (commercial): Replace the external limescale cartridge every 6 months.
  • ⚠️ Replace earlier if the filter reaches its litre capacity or the HydroTap has exceptionally heavy use.

What's the Difference Between the Internal and External HydroTap Filters?

Many Zip HydroTap owners are surprised to learn that their system may have two different filters, each with a different job.

Internal HydroTap Filter

The internal HydroTap filter is the primary water filter fitted inside every Zip HydroTap. It is supplied with every new HydroTap system and removes impurities to deliver clean, great-tasting filtered water.

Over time, the filter will become exhausted, and your HydroTap will automatically display a filter replacement alert when it's time to fit a new one. Replacing the internal filter promptly helps maintain water quality, protects your HydroTap and ensures it continues to perform at its best.

Its job is to improve the quality and taste of your drinking water by removing:

  • Chlorine taste and odours

  • Sediment and fine particles

  • Some bacteria and cysts (depending on the filter type)

  • Other impurities that affect water quality

This filter ensures you enjoy clean, fresh-tasting boiling, chilled and sparkling water.

Typical replacement filters

  • 93701 – Most current Zip HydroTap for Home models

  • 93702 – Many current commercial Zip HydroTap for Work models

Good to know: Your HydroTap monitors this filter and will display a "Replace Filter" message when it's due for replacement.

External Limescale Filter Kit

The external filter kit is an additional filter installed on the incoming water supply before it reaches the HydroTap.

Its purpose is completely different.

Instead of improving taste, it protects the appliance by reducing limescale in hard water areas.

This helps to:

  • Protect the boiling system from limescale build-up

  • Maintain energy efficiency

  • Reduce the likelihood of breakdowns

  • Extend the lifespan of your HydroTap

  • Help maintain manufacturer warranty requirements where applicable

Do I Need Both An Internal Filter & An External Filter Kit for My Hydrotap?

If you live in a hard water area (such as London, much of the South East, East Anglia and many other UK regions), then yes. Check our hard water postcode checker here.

The two filters perform completely different jobs:

Internal Filter External Limescale Filter
Improves drinking water quality Protects the HydroTap from limescale
Fitted as standard Optional, but strongly recommended in hard water areas
Removes chlorine, sediment and impurities Reduces limescale before water enters the appliance
HydroTap reminds you when to replace it No reminder – replacement must be scheduled manually

Which Filter Do I Need?

  • Need better tasting water? Replace the internal HydroTap filter.

  • Need to protect your HydroTap from limescale? Install or replace the external limescale filter kit.

  • Live in a hard water area? You should have both fitted for the best performance and protection.

Top tip: Your Zip HydroTap only reminds you to replace the internal filter. It does not notify you when the external limescale filter cartridge needs replacing, so make sure you replace it at the recommended interval to keep your HydroTap protected.
